Waterport / Carlton
Located in Orleans County, Waterport New York is a quaint hamlet located where Route 279 crosses the Oak Orchard River at Lake Alice. The surrounding town is actually called Carlton, but since the post office is located in Waterport and mail is addressed to residents throughout the township as Waterport, most residents consider themselves to live in Waterport.
Unlike other Western New York villages with "-port" in their names, Waterport isn't on the Erie Canal. Instead, it's on the Oak Orchard River (also known as Oak Orchard Creek), just upstream from the dam that creates Lake Alice. The Town of Oak Orchard was formed from the Town of Gaines & Ridgeway in 1822. It was renamed Carlton in 1825. It is located in the northern central part of Orleans County on Lake Ontario. It is 9-3/4 miles across from east to west and 4-1/2 miles across from north to south. The first settlers were William & James Walsworth who came from Canada. There are 8 hamlets in the Town of Carlton; Carlton Station, Kent, Kenyonville, Kuckville, Oak Orchard-On-the-Lake, Point Breeze, The Bridges, and Waterport.
